80-Year Old ‘Chinese Grandpa’ Is A Beefcake
Wang Deshun, an internet sensation and 80-year-old grandfather, is proving designers worldwide wrong for not featuring older models in their runway shows. Before cranking up the techno music at his 80th birthday party, the man known as China’s hottest grandpa paused from his disc jockey duties to poke fun at the country’s staid traditional celebrations for the elderly.
The man being called “China’s hottest grandpa” first drew international attention last year when he walked topless with a chiseled body and a well-groomed mane, during a runway show at China Fashion Week. Deshun is a Chinese actor and artist, started his modeling career at the age of 79. Since then, he has become a role model for people as he’s remarkably reshaping the idea of being old.
Wang says he spends his mornings reading, and his afternoons exercising, swimming a half-mile every day. But he says anyone can make similar efforts. Determined to avoid mental and physical stagnation, Wang has explored new skills and ideas while devoting ample time to daily exercise. Last year, he walked the runway for the first time, his physique causing a national sensation. He takes obvious joy in subverting China’s image of what it means to be old.
After becoming the subject for a YouTube video ‘Be the fiercest’, with over 300,000 views since August, China’s ‘hottest grandpa’ received a lot of admiration and support worldwide for breaking stereotypes in the fashion industry.
Being an actor and artist from China, Deshun says he aims to defy the aging process by experimenting with new things and focusing on staying fit. According to a recent feature in the New York Times, Deshun described that his schedule included intense work-out of three hours per day.
Wang isn’t the only senior citizen gaining attention for his hot bod. In 2014, then-80-year-old Chinese grandmother Li Guochuan made headlines for doing 150 push-ups and sit-ups each day, plus playing regular games of basketball. And at 101 years old, New Yorker Ida Keeling is still setting records in the 100-meter dash.
