Elon Musk

“Failure is an option here. If things are not failing, you are not innovating enough.” – Elon Musk

Elon Musk, age 45, known for his Tesla Motors and SpaceX is one of the known self-made entrepreneurs in the world. He was born on 28th June, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa. The talented kid was so keen to become a developer that he started learning how to program at the age of 10 and by being 12, he created a video game called ‘Blaster’. Elon has been a severe victim of bullying during his school life. He was once thrown from stairs that gave him an injury causing breathing difficulties, Elon faces till now.

Elon’s family has a successful background. His grandfather won a race from Cape Town to Algiers, while a great-grandmother was the first female chiropractor in Canada. Elon’s mother, Maye Musk was a successful model of her time and no she is a well known dietitian. When Elon turned 17, his mother and his younger siblings Kimbal (now a successful chef) and Tosca (a TV producer) resettled in Canada.

Education and 1st startup

Elon later continued his studies at Queen’s University in Ontario. Later he went to University of Pennsylvania (US) to study business and physics. Then he joined Stanford University in 1995 but dropped out to work for his first startup Zip2 Corporation. The Zip2 Corporation was an online city guide that soon provided content for websites like The New York Times and the Chicago Tribune. But in 1999, Compaq Computer Corporation bought Zip2 for $307 million in cash. At that time, Elon was 28 years old.

The next setup by Musk was an electronic payment startup; named X.com renamed PayPal in 2001. This was sold to eBay for $1.29 billion in 2002. Now Elon is much more into rockets, space, exploring and innovation in the world.

SpaceX; a step in the space

After when he founded SpaceX (Space Exploration Technologies Corporation) in 2002, his intention changed from creating software to creating spacecrafts for space travel. In 2008, NASA gave SpaceX the contract to handle cargo transportation in the International Space Station. This is when Musk made exploring-the-future-of-human-race his major interest. He also founded Musk Foundation for space exploration.

In 2102, the company sent the first ever privately funded vehicle into the orbit as Falcon 9. In 2013, falcon 9 carried a satellite to geosynchronous transfer orbit (the height that allows satellites to match Earth’s rotation) in 2015; SpaceX launched another falcon 9 with Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite which studied the affect of sun emissions on the power grids and communications system of earth. In 2017, gave another test flight and landing of falcon 9 made of reusable parts.

Tesla motors; electric cars for the future

Innovation interest of Elon attracted him to create cars. The first electric car called Tesla Roadster came in 2008. It was known for its power acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds with boasting range of 245 miles per hour. The next success was The Model S which came in 2012 and was honored as the 2013 Car of the Year by Motor Trend magazine.

“We have planes, trains, automobiles and boats… what if there was a fifth mode?”

Yes, Musk came up with a new form of transportation called ‘Hyperloop’, sending pods through a vacuumed tube at 800 miles an hour. This means a 4 hour journey can be completed in 25 minutes. In 2013 he came up this concept. He also duly noted that creating such a thing, can take 7-10 years.

Personal life

Elon married Justine Wilson, with whom he had five children, twins and triplets. But they ended up divorced in 2008. He later married English actress Talulah Riley in 2010 but after “quite hard, quite the crazy ride” according to Riley, they were divorced in 2016.
