Barack Obama and Joe Biden had one last join public appearance as president and vice president Thursday afternoon when Mr. President awarded vice president Joe Biden America’s highest civilian honour Presidential Medal of Freedom in an emotional and tearful surprise ceremony at the White House.
The event began with a playful and heartfelt tribute from Obama to one of his closest friends and confidantes in Washington. As he finished his remarks, the president asked one of his military aides to come to the stage.
“For the final time as president I am pleased to award our nation’s highest civilian honor.” Obama began as a Marine officer bearing the medal stood by.
After gathering reporters and each of their families, Obama launched into his speech lightheartedly, telling the room: ‘I just wanted to get some folks together to pay tribute to somebody who’s not only been by my side for the duration of this entire journey but somebody who has devoted his entire professional life to service to this country, the best Vice President America has ever had, Mr Joe Biden.’
‘This also gives the internet one last chance to talk about our bromance.’
Biden went in shock as Mr. Obama announced he was conferring the nation’s highest civil honour on his right-hand-man for eight years. Mr. Biden turned away from the cameras, wiped away some tears, then stood stoically as Mr. Obama draped the blue-and-white ribbon around his neck
“I just hope that the asterisk in history that is attached to my name when they talk about this presidency is that I can say I was part of the journey of a remarkable man who did remarkable things for this country,” Mr. Biden said.
“I had no idea,” Mr. Biden said of the award, insisting he didn’t deserve it.
