Director AR. Murugadoss, who presented Aamir Khan in the famous eight-pack abs look in Ghajini, is back with Sonakshi Sinha in Akira. Looking at the trailers we see a temporary scar on  Sinha’s face for her role in Akira.  It is done to depict the character’s painful past. Sharing the screen space with Sinha are Anurag Kashyap and Konkana Sen in supporting roles. Sonakshi is said to have performed high-octane action scenes for the film. But is it so?

The film sees Sonakshi as Akira Sharma, a girl who comes to Mumbai from Jodhpur, for her education and with hopes to erase the scars of an unsettling childhood. But unknown to her, Akira finds herself in the middle of a crime; where she gets into a tiff with the goons of the college. .  Suddenly, she stands to lose everything – her family, her friends, even her own sense of identity – as she becomes the hunted. Now she has only herself to trust, and she needs to find the strength within her to stand up for what is right and prove her own innocence and attain justice.

It is a remake of Santha Kumar’s Tamil film, Mouna Guru. As Akira is a women-oriented film that will touch up on a sensitive case, it will also showcase crucial case of acid attacks taking around the country. Moreover, Akira portrays the life of an acid attack victim and the social stigma they go through in the filmShe is seen kicking asses of men and thrashing them with much ease. She underwent a lot of training for her role in the movie. You’ll notice than Sonakshi has also chopped her locks to get the college-going girl’s look right. The film stars Anurag Kashyap as the villain and Konkana Sen Sharma as an investigative police officer. Both look promising, but Kashyap steals the show.

Vishal-Shekhar has perhaps the biggest films of the year in their kitty. After a hit soundtrack for a blockbuster film with Sultan, the duo is back for AR Murugadoss’s Akira. Lets have a quick view..

In Rajj rajj ke,  Sonakshi gives us abundant glimpses of her character in the movie as she is seen smashing one thing after another throughout the song. But wait, the song is just pop angst and there is nothing more to it. Sonakshi is struggling hard to make that powerful impact, but this is not expected out of a composition from Vishal-Shekhar. No doubt, Sonakshi’s anger is inescapable in this number but fails to connect with the listeners.

Purza is vintage Vishal-Shekhar! Breezy tune, brilliantly sung by Arijit, with a dash of Latino, and a surprising smattering of thavil in the second stanza! “Mein purza purza tera… na aadha pona tera, mein poora poora tera.” But this one is not even an inch closer to what the singer has given us earlier. Purza uses only a few instruments and the simplicity of the music highlights the vocals.

Shekhar is fantastic in the rhythmic, North-Eastern’ish melody of Kehkasha. Sung by Shekhar Ravjiani, this is the same composition as the brilliant Haravali Pakhare from the Marathi film Balak Palak, also composed for by Vishal-Shekhar. For starters, the tune is beautiful, which gives reason as to why it is being reused.

Though Sunidhi Chauhan is the marquee name of Baadal, the song’s real performer is the minimalist guitar riff that comes in once in a while and really makes the song. Not a memorable song by any means, Sunidhi kind of salvages it to a point because of who she is and what she can do.

The album has contemporary music with shades of Rock music and signature Vishal-Shekhar compositions. The music doesn’t really live up to the standards of Vishal-Shekhar, but some elements of the songs will surely keep you hooked!

For the Sonakshi Sinha-starrer ‘Akira’, the internet has been abuzz with praises for the ‘Holiday’ actress for stepping out of her girl-next-door avatar and taking on a more powerful role, playing a rebellious college student and taking on Anurag Kashyap as the enemy!
