Jailed South African Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius was rushed to Pretoria’s Kalafong Hospital yesterday after sustaining injuries to his wrists in jail. A prisons spokesman said the injuries were “minor” and he had been returned to prison after Saturday’s incident.
Although information is still sketchy, a social media report claimed that the former Paralympic athlete had injured his wrists in his prison cell.
The South African weekly City Press, citing another inmate at the prison, said Pistorius was rushed to hospital after intentionally cutting his wrists.
When asked about the report, Singabakho Nxumalo, a spokesman for the department of correctional services, said: “We can’t confirm that, it’s only speculation.”
‘Oscar Pistorius denied speculations of a suicide attempt,’ Wolela said in a text message to media.
‘As a policy principle, we cannot further discuss a particular offender’s personal condition in the public domain,’ he said. Pistorius’ family declined to comment, referring inquiries to the correctional services department.
