He is the voice behind hit numbers like Main rahoon ya na rahoon, Main hoon hero tera,  Hua hai aaj pehli baar, Tumhe Apna Banane ka, etc that has rocked playlist of Hindi music fans. At just an age of 20, singer Armaan Malik has created a niche for himself in the industry.  He is the son of music producer Daboo Malik, nephew of veteran music director Anu Malik , and brother of music composer Amaal Malik. While in Indore to attend a function, he spoke to Youthensnews about his journey to music industry-

Hailing from a well established musical family, was it easy for you to make career in music?

People often think that we get things easily if we have roots in the industry. I started off my career like other peers with reality show Sa re ga ma pa lil champs when I was 10, and auditioned for various singing projects. It was my conscious decision not to begin my career with family member or get stereotyped.

How did you get your first break in singing?

I got my first break with song Mere buddy (Bhootnaath) composed by Vishal-Shekhar. I was a reality show contestant when I auditioned for this song. The show was hosted by singer Shaan who approved my name, when the composer duo enquired him about my singing after the auditions.

Your single debut ‘Main rahoon ya na rahoon’ starring Emraan Hasmi has become a huge success. How did you plan it?

I and Amaal keep exploring new music all the time. If we think of any good tune or listen to it anywhere in party, event or car, we work on it and create something.  The song was Amaal’s idea and he randomly asked me to lend voice to it. Later, he presented it to music producer Bhushan Kumar who called me to inform it was going to be my debut single song.

What makes this song more special to you than others?

Main rahoon ya na is dedicated to my grandfather Sardar Malik. He was also a music composer.  My grandfather and father Daboo Malik have tried career in music industry, but they could not achieve what they thought would. It was my grandfather’s dream that I and Armaan pursue a successful career in music industry. I sang this song while thinking of him and his thoughts in mind. Every word of it is dedicated to him.

Tell us about your bond with your ideal singer Sonu Nigam.

I have grown up listening to his songs. There is no one who can outshine him till date. I have met lot of actors and singers, but I always get nervous in front of him. My feelings for him cannot be explained in words. Whenever I work on new composition, I ask for his opinion and continue with it when he agrees. He say that his journey to music industry was like me ,and that he is living his journey through me.

What is your style of singing in studio?

Every singer has a different style while recording a song in studio. I prefer complete dark in studio while singing. I personally  bond with every tune. Darkness help me to connect with soul, focus better and sing the way I want.

How is your chemistry with Arijit Singh?

Arijit  is very talented, genuine and kind-hearted singer. We have worked together on many projects. He is like a elder brother to me ,and also shares a good repo with Amaal. I love the way he sings brilliantly and effortlessly. I have told Amaal to call me at his studio whenever Arijit is recording a song. I learn new things everytime I see him.

What keeps you busy besides music?

I love cooking. I am very good at making breakfast. I keep experimenting with different recipes and come up with my own one. I would have probably started my own cafe if I was not a singer.

Do you plan to do anything other than singing?

I have a flair for acting. I wish to try hands on it at the age of 26 or 27. I would like to do roles like Rahul Roy in Aashiqui.

What are your upcoming projects?

I recently recorded songs for upcoming Bollywood films including Do Lafzo ki Kahani, Kapoor & Sons and few untitled projects. I am also working on private album which will be released soon.
