Youth is Power, any evolution and any revolution in the world took shape with the concrete and active participation of youth. When youth think, he or she decides the fates and destiny. So rational and constructive thought is very important for any society.

Started 7 years back JacoMUN or St James School’s Model United Nations have been playing an important role in encouraging the decisions of the youths from various schools across the country. This year too JacoMUN 2016 was a great success.

The Model United Nations was for Three days, where eight different committees where formed and discussions on several landmark events from the past and present has taken place which made JacoMUN an interesting assembly of school students donning the cloak of delegates from around the world to tackle a wide range of issues in crisis situations.

The committees, each with nearly 25 delegates, comprised students from 30-odd schools across the country, including La Martiniere for boys and girls, Don Bosco, Park Circus, Delhi Public School-Ruby Park and St. Xavier’s Collegiate School besides the hosts, St. James.

The members of the International Summit of Islamic Leaders committee had to deal with two broad agendas – misrepresentation of Islam by militant groups and the Islam-Zionist conflict.

Indian Colloquy on Cross-border Terrorism was a mock off-the-record conference attended by politicians, bureaucrats and terrorist organizations to discuss cross-border terrorism.

Yeltsin’s Cabinet witnessed the assassination of Yeltsin and the shift of power to Vladimir Putin, while Clinton’s Cabinet deliberated on a number of topics such as the Islamic states’ actions close to Turkish and Iranian borders, nuclear arms race in West Asia with Iran gaining close to eight nuclear warheads at their disposal with Russian help.

Other committees at the MUN included the Historic Security Council, the UN General Assembly Legal, the League of Nations that focused on the aftermath of World War II and World Media Council.

It was no easy job for the student delegates. As an under-secretary general, Oishik Dasgupta had to have a fair idea of what’s going on all around. “There were times when I had to give certain conference affairs priority over my cabinet, but I believe that taking challenges help us in the long run,” said the Class XII student of the host school St James, who was also the chair of Clinton’s Cabinet.

Chairing the League of Nations was an incredible experience. Though history shows that the League of Nations was a failed organization, we managed to turn it into a success,” said Ujaan Ganguly, a former student of St. James’ School.

St. James’ School principal T.H. Ireland was impressed with the way the students pulled off such a huge show. “Everyone is talented and events such as these give students a lot of exposure,” he said.

Three long days came to a happy end with La Martiniere for Boys clinching the Best Delegation trophy. “Being adjudged the Best Delegation is a great achievement,” gushed Class XII student Farhad Islam, who also bagged the trophy for Best Delegate in the League of Nations.

From a humble beginning in 2009, with the very first JacoMUN being hosted on our school premises, to the seventh session of the conference in 2016, the St. James’ School Model United Nations Conference has grown from strength to strength and JacoMUN ’16 will be taking it to an all new level.
