BAAR BAAR DEKHO:  A beautiful time travel

Nitya Mehra, who marks her debut in Bollywood with Baar Baar Dekho features the kala chashma girl Katrina Kaif and Sidharth Malhotra in the lead roles. The story dabbles in the intriguing and challenging territory of time travel, exploring the consequences of the choices we make, against the backdrop of a love story that spans 30 years. Produced by Karan Johar, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidwani, the film will be a bumper opening and all that accounts to Kaif who is leaving no stone un-turned in promoting her upcoming release. Along with her co-star, Sidharth Malhotra, she’s going all out taking the film to different cities and promoting it in the most quirky way possible.

Especially stunning are the film’s locations — Baar Baar Dekho has been largely shot in Glasgow, Scotland with some portions in the beautiful island of Krabi in Thailand. The film is said to be a love story that travels through time and Sidharth along with co-star Katrina Kaif will be sporting different looks in the film. Baar Baar Dekho previously titled ‘Kal Jisne Dekha’ movie is a very emotional love story and makes you realise what is happiness.

Jai and Diya, a couple in love have a big fight which leads to an odd situation where Jai’s life keeps time-jumping — overnight he skips 10 days, two years, 18 years. Why is Jai jumping timelines like a hyperactive? Why does Kaif so frequently look sad? These are questions worth waiting to be answered, from Mehra’s film.

Coming to the performances, Malhotra sincerely grapples with the absurdity of the premise, his indignant shock at finding himself 46 is spot-on and Kaif shimmies around, looking even more spectacular than usual. Katrina is especially refreshing and shows some genuine comic timing while the two, who have never done a film together before, look gorgeous together and share a crackling chemistry. Eventually, Baar Baar Dekho seems to fall in traditional Bollywood territory where love should be placed above everything, hinting at the extent people will go to fix a love story gone awry.

BAAR BAAR DEKHO   is a multi-composer soundtrack (five sets of composers for six songs) but such albums don’t often become blockbusters. Will this buck the trend?

‘Kaala chashma’, an instant earworm has already taken the nation by storm. It’s a modern day reworking by Badshah of Amar Arshi’s original. Sung by Amar Arshi, Badshah, Neha Kakkar and Indeep Bakshi, it retains the mad frenzy of the original and compels you to move to its rhythm. Nevertheless, it was a smart marketing ploy by the makers of Baar Baar Dekho to release the Punjab song a week before the trailer launch.

‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahan ’ features another indie musician: the talented Prateek Kuhad  as lyricist and singer. It also marks Jasleen’s  Bollywood debut as a composer with this album. Kho Gaye Hum Kahan has its heart in the right place and balances the music and lyrics extremely well. It generates that warm and fuzzy feeling inside. This song is a winner as an audio track and its placement in the film could make it even better.

Composer Amaal Malik and lyricist Kumaar deliver ‘Sau Aasmaan’, sung by Malik and Neeti Mohan. Malik mixes country music with electronic dance music sounds and adds claps and finger snaps to produce a number that is pleasant on the ears and easy to groove to.

Dariya’ written, composed and sung by Arko is a soulful number commenting on the vagaries of love. Arko sings it well enough. It feels like a country song caught in a Bollywood beat. The beautiful lyrics of this song are a highlight and with a simplistic musical arrangement, the blend is extremely nice.

Jasleen Kaur’s ‘Nach De Ne Saare’, is a complete entertainer. The song is high on ‘desi’ flavor and the perfect wedding song for the season. Royal layers the song with happy and wacky sounds that go well with Aditya Sharma’s quirky lines and also plays supporting vocalist as Harshdeep Kaur and Siddharth Mahadevan lead the rendition in style.

Pakistani Singer composer Bilal Saeed has reworked his own ‘Khair mangdi’ to make it sound more Bollywoodish. It’s a soulful track that belongs more to a classic love story than a futuristic romance. It’s easily the song of the album nevertheless, as far as melody is concerned.

The music album of Baar Baar Dekho turns out to be a winner! It is entertaining, fresh and high on life. It is catchy and fun and with a couple of tracks already doing the rounds of the party circuit echoing the baar baar feeling!
